Is Playing Free Poker Worthwhile?

Playing free poker games is a way to improve your game.  The more poker hands you play, the better you will get.

However, you should remember that the people who play free poker games aren’t always the same kinds of people that play the cash games.  Some people who play free online poker games are simply playing for fun, and don’t care about the hands they’re playing.  This difference in attitude and psychology means that people take many risks in free games that they would not take in a cash game.

The risk-taking attitude means that you’re more likely to get bad beats in free games.  As long as you can remain detatched from the game, and understand what was going on in the head of your opponents at each point in a hand, you can still take something away from each free play game.

Try to avoid falling into bad risk-taking habits when you play free play games yourself.  You should make sure that you aren’t throwing money away because you know it isn’t real.  There are some occasions where risks are worthwhile – for example, going all-in during an early hand in a tournament in the hopes of doubling up or scooping some pots, but if you are trying to hone your skills for cash games, playing good, solid poker is a good idea even at this early stage.
